You knew it was coming! I don't watch too many ballet videos though, so this post will be shorter, but nonetheless probably containing even more amazing videos than the previous few posts. Here are my favorite pieces in ballet:
The Great Chinese State Circus - Swan Lake
This is a feat to be reckoned with. I know you're thinking "Circus? What?," but trust me here, this is not just any circus. This is disgustingly beautiful, scarily amazing, and probably two of the best/most skilled dancers in the world. If you have even 1/10th of her (or his) ability, you're set for life.
Performed by Ma Li (馬麗) and Zhai Xiaowei (翟孝偉) - Hand in Hand
Another of the greatest performances ever. While the one above will make you gasp in wonder, this one is sure to make you cry. You'll see what I mean. Absolutely amazing.
Patricia Zhou - New Generation Ballerina (info) & Dream Ballet (dancing)
Seems like all of the ballet videos are inspirational! I personally think the background information video (first one) is more inspirational than the actual dancing, because when you see what she's come from, the fact that a 17 year old Chinese girl being accepted into the Royal Ballet is even more amazing. She's breathtaking.
Yuan Yuan Tan - Artist Spotlight
I had to throw in one of my favorite ballerinas ever. This is Yuan Yuan Tan, a principle in the San Francisco Ballet. She's about as accomplished, dynamic, and beautiful as you can possibly hope for! See more of her highlights here.
Tyce Diorio - This Woman's Work
Okay, for those of you who know Tyce, you're wondering what this video's doing here. In terms of the inspirational message, there's no doubt it belongs with the rest of these videos. But even more, this is a strictly-trained 29-year-old ballerina dancing a beautiful contemporary piece. This video is here for two reasons: 1) proof. ballerinas can do things other than ballet. 2. her ballet serves her well - no one else could have done this as beautifully. you can see the training in everything she does, so this is my proof that ballet is the basis of almost any style of dancing.
Austin Eder - Dancer Profile from Anaheim Ballet Ballet: Tiny Dancer
Okay, all I'm saying here is that she's 10, she's been en pointe for 3 months (at the time this video was shot), and she's doing fouette turns. That's really all I have to say...
Tiare Keeno - Faculty Solo at NYCDA
This is crazy. The choreography, first of all, is so contemporary ballet and new and interesting. Then there's the take on the music: very playful and intense at the same time. This is her "faculty solo" because she was a teacher's assistant in the senior room during the NYCDA convention. Oh yeah, did I mention she was only 14? Check out everything else she can do in Ice Cream.
abyrdjr - Ballet Audition
As with every other list I've made, I have to include at least one that's filmed beautifully. This is a cute, unexpected, and lovely short film about a ballerina who has to decide whether or not to audition when her pointe shoes are accidentally taken.
Anaheim Ballet - Ballet: SNAP!
Okay, I thought I'd end with something to ease the tension. This isn't really inspirational, although it is quite beautiful and amazing if you think about it. It's just a little bit of fun. Obviously, this is what people in ballet companies do in their spare time. Heh.
Please excuse the overwhelming number of videos that are somehow China-related! There are plenty of beautiful and amazing ballet companies that I didn't touch on: the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballets (Russia), American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet (NYC/USA), the Royal Ballet (Britain), Paris Opera Ballet (France). These are just examples of amazing ballet in the world, there are many more. Check them out! Hope you enjoyed!
